Are you a new or aspiring business analyst looking for some practical help in getting started? Are you a seasoned business analyst who is looking for new approaches or techniques to add to your set of skills? Are you just looking for a few tips and tricks to add some polish to your delivery to help you stand out?
Then you’ve come to the right place!
The goal of Real World BA™ is to explain Business Analysis in Plain English™. Because a Real World BA is expected to jump in, be effective, and deliver quality. Many times you’ll be working in environments where there are no formalized processes, no templates, and minimal support; where the only “tools” you have are Microsoft Word, Excel and Visio. You might not have had the opportunity to get formal training nor are you certified, but you can still be successful.
I’ll help you understand what a business analyst is and share tactical and practical tips and techniques to help you stand out while making your job a little easier. There is a lot of great information about business analysis out there, and I’ll break the ideas down and explain them in plain English. I’ll explain the jargon and give you real world examples.
And all of this information is based on more than a decade of experience working on projects of all sizes, in companies big and small.
And why would I do that?
I have been fortunate in my career to have had (and continue to have) the opportunity to work with and learn from some really amazing BA’s. Learning from people who are in the trenches, feeling my pain, and helping me find my way has been invaluable. But also, like many of you, I’ve learned a lot on my own and had my fair share of trial and error. So now I’d like to give back – to help you learn from my mistakes, to share with you the little things that polish your delivery, and ultimately to help you be a Real World BA.
I’ll present you with multiple ideas and various points of view, so that you can decide what works best for you. And I encourage a hearty discussion about each topic so that we can all continue to learn from each other. (Please read the Comment Policy so that you know what to expect.) I am not shy about expressing my point of view and making my suggestions – but to truly be a Real World BA, we must always challenge what we know and strive to be better.
So whether you are interested in learning what a business analyst does, or you already are one and are always looking to improve your game, make sure you don’t miss a thing! Sign up to receive updates via email, follow me on Facebook or Twitter, or grab my RSS feed.

About Karie Price
With nearly 15 years of experience as a business analyst and project manager in a variety of industries, I have worked with teams large and small to prove my value as a Real World BA. Having had the opportunity to develop and implement best practices and templates with numerous companies, I have learned (sometimes the hard way) that what works for one company or project does not work for them all.
A member of the IIBA (and a founding member of the San Diego, CA chapter), I am currently a Sr. Business Analyst for a mid-size insurance carrier working remotely from Houston, TX. Along with being an active business analyst on strategic projects, I lead the Business Analyst Center of Excellence for the organization.
